Question

What do I do with a variable when it's next to the number??? Example I'm supposed to solve for the variable but I'm given the number, this is the equation x-2y= 1 for y HELPP??!

Answer

(x-1)/2=y

  • If you're given the equation x-2y=1 and you're supposed to solve for y, first isolate y on one side of the equation. To do this, add 2y to both sides of the equation.
  • x-2y+2y=1+2y A: Simplify the left-hand side of the equation by canceling the -2y and +2y terms on the left-hand side. We get: x = 1+2y
  • Now isolate the term with y in it, subtract 1 from both sides of the equation. A: x-1 = 2y
  • Simplify the right-hand side of the equation by dividing both sides by 2. A: (x-1)/2=y
