What number of electrons do most transition metals need for stability?


The atomic number of an element determines its electron configuration. Explanation: Every element has a unique number of protons, known as its atomic number. This number determines the number of electrons in the atom and therefore its electron configuration. Elements strive to achieve a stable electron configuration, which for most elements involved filling the outermost shell with eight electrons. However, the noble gases have a stable configuration with a full valence shell of eight electrons. As a result, elements typically seek to achieve a configuration that matches the nearest noble gas. For example, an element with an atomic number of 18 would need to achieve a configuration that matches the next noble gas, which is argon.
